Im Januar waren Mark und ich zweimal in Florenz. In Florenz, oder wie die Italiener sagen Firenze, der Stadt in der Toskana wo Kultur, Kunst und Geschichte zu Hause sind. Eine gute Gelegenheit mal wieder ein paar Stadtbilder zu machen.
In January, Mark and Myself were in Florence twice. Florence, or as the
Italians say, Firenze, is the city in Tuscany where culture, art and
history are altogether at home. A good opportunity to take a few more

Einmal waren wir da um der Eröffnung einer Ausstellung von Mark in einer Galerie beizuwohnen und Ende Januar weil Mark den "International Prize Leonardo Da Vinci - The Universal Artist" erhielt. Beides tolle Erlebnisse und insbesondere die Preisverleihung im
Borghese Palace war sehr eindrucksvoll und unvergesslich.
Aber Florenz ist natürlich auch als Stadt sehr spannend und sehr schön. Alt, ehrwürdig, ein bisschen abgeblättert an manchen Stellen aber eine Stadt mit viel Flair und voll von der italienischen Lebensart.
At the beginning of January we were there for the opening of an
exhibition of Mark’s work, and again at the end of January, so that Mark
could receive the “International Prize Leonardo Da Vinci - The
Universal Artist”. Both were wonderful experiences and the prize
ceremony especially, in the Borghese Palace, was very impressive and
unforgettable.
However, Florence itself is, of course, both exciting and very
beautiful. Old, venerable and perhaps a little bit ‘worn’ here and
there, but nevertheless a city with much flair, and very much full of
the 'Italian life’.
Hier nun ein paar Bilder von Mark und von mir welche den Charakter der Stadt ein wenig wiedergeben sollen. Die prachtvollen, alten Gebäude, die Statuen und antiken Figuren sind eindrücklich.
Here are a collection of pictures from Mark and myself, which we hope
will give a little flavour of the city with its grandiose old buildings,
and its statues and antique figures, all of which are simply so
impressive.
Ganz besonders eindrucksvoll ist natürlich die Kathedrale Santa Maria del Fiore im Herzen der Stadt. Unzählige Touristen sind dort den ganzen Tag und das eindrucksvolle Bauwerk sieht man von ganz vielen Stellen in der Stadt und man kann es leicht als Orientierungspunkt nutzen. Immerhin die viertgrößte Kirche in Europa und sie gilt als technische Meisterleistung der frühen Renaissance. Die Dimensionen sind gewaltig und es gibt unzählige Details zu entdecken.
Very special indeed, and almost unavoidable, is the Santa Maria del
Fiore Cathedral in the heart of the city. Surrounded the whole day by
uncountable tourists, this impressive construction can be seen from very
many places in the city, so that its really quite easy to use it as an
orientation point as you walk down the winding narrow lanes. It is the
forth largest church in Europe, and at the time was renowned as the
absolute peak of early renaissance construction. Its size is
overwhelming with simply so many details to discover around every
corner.
Aber auch die engen Gassen haben es uns angetan, insbesondere in den Abend- und Nachtstunden. Dort findet man wunderschöne kleine Geschäfte, Restaurants und viele Galerien und Museen.
Naturally, the narrow streets are also very appealing
especially in the romantic evening air. Here, there are wonderful small
shops, cosy restaurants and many galleries and museums waiting to be
discovered.
Interessante Effekte ergibt es wenn man die Leute welche unterwegs sind aus tiefer Perspektive mit erfasst wie es Mark hier getan hat.

the 'hustle and bustle’ of the city life from the street surface …
Und natürlich gibt es stets auch abseits der Touristenwege und der prachtvollen Gebäude interessantes, skurriles und lustiges zu entdecken.
Of course, away from the massing throng of tourists (even
in January) and the grand buildings, there are also interesting,
whimsical, almost comical things waiting to be discovered.
Natürlich war auch die Ponte Vecchio, die älteste Brücke über den Arno in Florenz eines unserer Ziele.
The Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge over the Arno was an unmissable attraction.
Florenz ist eine Stadt welche unbedingt einen Besuch wert ist. Unschlagbaren leckeren italienischen Cappuccino in einem der vielen Straßencafes trinken, ein bisschen Antipasti genießen oder leckere Pasta, durch die engen Gassen schlendern und überall auf historische Kunstwerke treffen, die intalienische Lebensart genießen oder eines der Museen oder eine Galerie besuchen und noch vieles mehr. Florenz ist eine Stadt der man ihre Größe nicht anmerkt, man kann sehr gut zu Fuß unterwegs sein oder auch einen Bus benutzen. Und Florenz ist auch für einen Wochenendtrip von Deutschland aus gut geeignet. Mit dem Auto ist man natürlich schon recht lang unterwegs, aber mit dem Flugzeug ist man von Frankfurt aus innerhalb einer Stunde da und lohnenswert ist es auf jeden Fall.
Florence is a city you simply have to visit: to drink an unbelievably
tasty cappuccino in one of the many street cafés; to enjoy a little
anti-pasta or pasta in the corner of a small restaurant; to simply
wander through the winding lanes with a little history at nearly every
turn; to simply enjoy the ‘Italian Lifestyle’; a Gallery here; a museum
there; there is simply so much to see. Florence is a city in which one
readily overlooks just how big it is - it is no problem to wander
through the city on foot but its also easy enough to take the occasional
bus if you want to go just that little bit further. Florence is so
easy to reach that it makes the perfect weekend trip. Of course in the
car its a bit of a jaunt, but by plane you can be there in around an
hour (from Frankfurt) and it is worth it.
Wir werden auf jeden Fall zurückkehren.
We will, without doubt, return again.
