PARIS... PARIS

A couple of days before Christmas Mark and myself were in Paris for a long weekend.  As one would expect a wonderful and impressive experience. Read more ...

A few weeks ago in new York I realised just how much fun it can be to photograph city (see the article HERE) and thus it would be no surprise that in Paris the camera came along as well.  For this reason here are a few more city images from myself as well as a few from Mark that he has kindly made available in order to complete the article.

Although I had not appreciated before it is really quite exciting and a lot of fun to try and capture the flavour of a city in image. Every city has its own special character and mood and this is especially true of such an imposing city such as Paris with its long history. In New York I had the real impression that the clock ticks just that little bit fast and that one has the feeling of being near the heartbeat of the world.  In Paris however everything seemed to be just a little slower and somehow timeless.

Paris is of course full of life and naturally of countless tourists as well.  This bright city is simply full with people, full with traffic and pulses endlessly.  Nevertheless, Paris does not exude the same sense of anonymity, especially in the less touristic parts away from the centre and you get a real impression that people who know each other are continually meeting in the street.  This was something that I never felt even once in New York.

It might be something of a cliché but Paris really does have its own charm.  A heady mixture of old and beautiful buildings and monuments, of expensive fashion shops with their elegantly dressed visitors and of course, the many small cafés and boutiques on every corner.

Near to the well known tourist magnets, as it is in any large city, everything is really quite commercial, but as soon as you leave these areas, you really get the feel that you are in the 'real' Paris. We were lucky enough to have dry and sunny weather, which means a few days before Christmas we were able to sit outside in the sun, enjoying our Café au Lait and a few of the very nice gastronomic specialities, and watch the Parisian life pass us by.

A visit to Notre-Dame was must for this visit: a monumental building which is just as impressive from the outside as from within, which, if one is prepared to wait in the queue (about 1 hour in our case), also offers a magnificent view of the Parisian skyline.  Here is a panorama that Mark has taken from this view point (By clicking on the image a larger view can be opened).

The plethora of figures and embellishments that adorn the outside of the cathedral are alone for themselves worth the visit.

A few days before Christmas Paris was alight with festive illuminations and the Christmas market was one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. The multitude of lights, the large wheel, everything simply seemed to fit the mood and was wonderful to see.

The most famous landmark of all is without doubt the Eiffel Tower, which can be seen from so many places within the city. Images of the tower at night with its illuminations are not allowed to be published, however, even during the day, this gigantic work with its graphic shapes and wonderful architecture simply invites you to explore it as a motif.

Sacré Coeur on Montmartre is on the one hand itself an amazing and beautiful monument and on the other offers a wonderful view of Paris.  It is a church that is as equally impressive both from within as from outside.

Paris is a city that has been described, captured in song, painted and photographed so many times. It is for me one of the city that one has to visit at least once in your life.  All the more poignant therefore that we found ourselves in Paris just a few weeks after the horrendous terrorist attacks and these were very much in our thoughts.  As tourists we were very much aware of the large presence of soldiers and security at the airport and the city tourist magnets, beyond this however, even though it was ever present in our thoughts, it was not possible as a visitor to tell if anything was really different.  Speaking to somebody who lives in paris, who shared with us a few harrowing stories from his friends and family, we were made aware that life in Paris had indeed changed quite dramatically, though people were doing there best to not let it effect how they chose to live their lives. This affected me deeply and the thought that a city such as Paris, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with so much charm and character, with so much history, with so much life, so much joie de vivré and so elegant, could become a terrorist target made at once me both very sad and angry. Despite this we never felt ourselves to be in danger in Paris and will continue, wherever we are, to explore destinations without fear.  The immeasurable sorrow that one feels for victims and their families and friends cannot be described and there are no words of comfort: They have our deepest sympathy.  The shattered Glass Monument of Peace, through which the Eiffel Tower can be seen, and on which the word Peace is written in so many languages, is somehow so very symbolic of these times.
