It is of course well known that New York is a ‘cool’ city and without
doubt there are already very many articles and pictures about and of New
York. Nevertheless I would like to add a few words of my own in this
article.
Dass New York eine sehr coole Stadt ist, das ist natürlich hinlänglich bekannt und ich denke über New York gibt es schon unzählig viel zu lesen und entsprechend viele Fotos. Ein paar mehr Worte und Bilder über diese Stadt möchte ich in diesem Artikel hinzufügen. New York muss man einfach fotografieren wenn man da ist, egal wie viele das schon vor mir getan haben.

I can think of very many superlatives for New York after all this city seems to be nothing but superlatives. I have been in many cities that I would not necessarily call ‘small’ but every where you go in New York you feel that this is ‘big’ in every sense: The size and density of the buildings; the thronging mass of people, the colours; the smells; simply everything. Especially from above you can see just how densely packed everything is and just how many gigantic buildings stand shoulder by shoulder.

Eigentlich waren Mark und ich ja in New York um
Marks Ausstellung zu sehen und der Eröffnung beizuwohnen, aber dazu später
mehr.
Zu New York fallen mir spontan jede Menge
Superlative ein, denn diese Stadt besteht einfach aus vielen Superlativen. Ich
war ja schon in einigen auch nicht gerade kleinen Städten, aber in New York
spürt man es tatsächlich überall, dass es sich tatsächlich um eine riesige
Stadt handelt. Gigantisch in jeder Hinsicht, die Größe und Dichte der Gebäude,
die vielen Menschen, die Farben, die Gerüche, einfach alles. Insbesondere von
oben sieht man sehr gut wie dicht bebaut es ist und wie viele Gebäude auf
engstem Raum stehen.

There is simply so many really tall buildings
which define the city. In the
‘narrow’ passages in between one feels really quite small and, despite the
absolute mass of people, I can imagine that it is possible to feel quite alone.
Dazu die Vielzahl an wirklich hohen Gebäuden
welche das Stadtbild prägen. In den engen Häuserschluchten fühlt man sich schon
sehr klein und trotz der Menschenmassen kann ich mir vorstellen unter Umständen
auch sehr einsam.

The new World Trade Center ranges above all
other buildings and is simply impressive.
We also visited ‘Ground Zero’ with its two monuments where the two
towers used to stand. A very
touching experience! Right in the
middle of this hectic and enormous city you get a real feeling of quiet and
stillness and the way that monuments have been built with there geometric forms
and flowing water left a very deep inpression – whoever was responsible for the
design has our deepest respect! I
photographed quite a lot (as the many pictures here testify) yet I did not take
a picture here, not even with my iPhone, it simply did not seem
appropriate. The picutres, the
news, the faces, the horror and fear from that day were suddenly very much
there: Real and oppressive!
New York gives the impression that actually you
know it already – wherever you stand.
Through the many films and TV series and the almost constant news
stories there seems to be so many points of recognition which ever way you
turn: Even the old city towers
give the impression that if you look closely enough you will see a Gremlin or
the Ghostbusters or whatever ...
Das neue World Trade Centre überragt alle
anderen Gebäude und wirkt schon sehr beeindruckend und großartig. Wir haben
auch Ground zero besucht und die Denkmäler an den Stellen wo die zwei Türme
standen. Ein sehr berührendes Erlebnis. Inmitten der Großstadthektik und den
vielen Reizen und Eindrücken hat man dort ein Gefühl von ein wenig Stille und
die Art und Weise wie Ground zero gestaltet wurde mit dem Wasser und den
geometrischen Formen hat mich tief berührt und derjenige der das entworfen hat,
hat meinen tiefsten Respekt. Ich habe sehr viel fotografiert, aber ich habe
kein Bild von diesem Ort mitgenommen, irgendwie war es für mich in dem Moment
nicht passend zu fotografieren, auch nicht einfach ein iPhone Knipsbild
mitzunehmen. Die Bilder , die Nachrichten, die Geschichten, das Entsetzen und
die Ängste von damals waren da und in dem Moment wenn man da steht extrem real
und beklemmend.
New York löst sowieso dauernd ein Gefühl aus,
dass man meint man würde die Orte kennen an welchen man steht. Dadurch, dass es
so viele Filme und Serien gibt welche da spielen und die Stadt sowieso dauernd
in den Medien präsent ist gibt es unzählige Verknüpfungen und Assoziationen.
Die wunderschönen alten Stadthäuser wo man sich fragt ob ein Gremlin irgendwo
wohnt, ob die Ghostbusters unterwegs sind und lauter solche Dinge.

New York ist wahnsinnig bunt, manchmal auch schrill, aber auf extrem kurzen Distanzen auch ambivalent, sehr Hochglanz, sehr stylisch, sehr alt, sehr verbaut, sehr eng, verfallen, modern und noch vieles mehr.

New York is simply full with people. Full with people who always seem to be
in a hurry to be somewhere else, people who always seem so busy, who seem to be
permanently using there smart phones or simply gazing around in astonishment
because they are tourists. You
very much get the impression that the heartbeat of the city is just that little
bit faster than in a European city:
There always seems to be just an air of hectic. Glamorous and yet
anonymous there are just so many opposites which catch the senses. Of course this is all so very different
to the places we normally visit: No arctic landscape, no flowering meadow, no
remote rocky coastline, no butterflies (at least not in November), no nature as
such (though ‘green’ and parks are there to be discovered more often than one
would imagine) but this also has its attraction and was a very special
experience.
New York ist voller Menschen, voller Menschen
die unterwegs sind, die wichtige Dinge zu tun scheinen, die kurz verharren, die
ständig auf ihre Smartphones starren oder telefonieren oder stauend
umherblicken weil sie Touristen sind. Es scheint als ob der Herzschlag dieser
Stadt einfach einen Tick schneller sei als in europäischen Städten, es liegt
immer ein wenig Hektik in der Luft, Anonymität, Glamour und viele Reize für
alle Sinne. Das ganze Gegenteil von dem, was wir sonst tun, keine arktische
Landschaft, keine Blumenwiesen, keine einsamen felsigen Küsten, keine
Schmetterlinge, keine Natur… aber auch das hat seinen Reiz und ist ein geniales
Erlebnis.

Even the first journey into the city from the
airport was amazing and I jumped about like a small child with an almost
constant flow of ‘wow’ and ‘cool’ and ‘look at that’ … ;-) Of course one would
think that living in such a city would be simply wonderful but even better is
the panoramic view of this city from the other side of the Hudson river. To wake early in the morning and to see
the sun rise over the ‘whole’ city from the hotel balcony … that is very
‘cool’. The ‘city that never
sleeps’ is how we know it and you can see why – there is always constant noise
and traffic, it is simply never still.
Nevertheless, in the morning you still have the feeling that the city is
‘waking up’ (or rather simply upping a gear or two) and that too is exciting to
experience: The streets begin to fill with people; there are ever more people
along the river bank who start their day with a work-out; ever more people
carrying the obligatory coffee beaker and phone as the disappear with the mass
of fellow commuters into the ferry station as they make their way to work; the
queues in Starbuck get longer; the first nannies are on there way in the parks;
people taking their dogs for a walk; a young couple practice dance routines in
the middle of a small park … a new day in New York has started. It is difficult to describe but there
are simply many things that you see where you say to yourself, almost half
smiling, ‘Yes ok, this is New York’ ;-)
Schon die Fahrt vom Flughafen in die Stadt war
für mich extrem eindrucksvoll und ich bin wie ein kleines Kind umhergehüpft,
habe ab und zu geschluckt und unzählige Male “Wow” und “wie cool”und “Schau mal
dies und schau mal das” gequietscht. ;-) Eigentlich meint man wenn man mitten
in dieser Stadt wohnt, das ist sicher genial, aber noch schöner ist es die
Stadt und diese Skyline als Panorama über dem Fluss zu sehen. Frühmorgens wach
zu werden und vom Balkon des Hotels einen Sonnenaufgang über dieser Kulisse zu
erleben, das ist schon ziemlich cool… Die “Stadt, die niemals schläft” heißt es
ja immer und das trifft auch zu, es ist immer Betrieb, es ist nie wirklich
still. Trotzdem hat man morgens das Gefühl, die Stadt erwacht und es ist spannend
das zu erleben. Die Straßen füllen sich mit Menschen, am Fluss werden es immer
mehr Läufer die ihren Tag mit einem Workout starten, immer mehr Leute mit dem
unvermeidlichen Kaffeebecher und dem phone in der Hand drängen sich an den
Ferrystationen um über den Fluss den Weg in ihr Büro anzutreten, die Schlangen
bei Starbucks werden länger, in den Parks sind die ersten Nannys unterwegs, die
Leute gehen mit ihren Hunden spazieren, ein paar junge Leute üben einen Tanz
ein in einer kleinen Parkanlage, der Tag in New York hat neu begonnen und auch
wenn es schwer zu erklären ist, es gibt viele Augenblicke die man erlebt wo man
kurz überlegt oder staunt, aber dann lächelnd denkt oder sagt “ok, ja, das ist
New York”. ;-)

yellow taxis, there always seems to be an ambulance or police car that has to
get somewhere in a hurry – the famces of the famous NYPD seem almost
recognizable and everywhere you go street names that you recognize instantly.

Time Square: Colourfull, loud, shrill and well
known from so many news stories and pictures from New Year’s Eve. Her you really do feel that you are
standing in the ‘pulse of the world’ with its constant visual barrage of news
from around the world, adverts brighter than daylight, so many restaurants,
theaters, fast food chains and shops.

Just as impressive as the sunrise is the
sunset. One evening we were in
Liberty Park with its amazing view to Dawn Town New York. As the last rays of sunlight illuminate
the towers only to be replaced by thousands of office lights, so that the city
seems to be a sea of lights, that is something special!
Ähnlich wie das Erwachen des Tages ist auch die
Dämmerung der Einbruch der Dunkelheit sehr beeindruckend. Wir waren einen Abend
in Liberty Park, relativ ruhig, aber mit genialem Blick auf die Skyline. Wenn
die letzten Strahlen der Abendsonne die Gebäude beleuchten, wenn langsam die
Lichter in den tausenden Fenstern angehen und diese Stadt wirkt wie ein
riesiges Lichtermeer, das ist schon ein beeindruckendes Erlebnis.

At first you ( me ;-) ) would think that it
would be difficult to orient yourself and to find your way but actually with
the numbering and straightness of the streets it is much easier than I
imagined. Although to be fair, I
was lucky enough to be underway with Mark, who already knew New York to a
certain extent anyway and therefore found his way rather easily. I had even
more respect when we were in the car: So much traffic, the streets that were so
full, the almost hidden and rather information poor road signs (how should I
know If I want to go East or West? ;-) ) – this was for me totally confusing
and not something I would have wanted to attempted alone.
As stated at the beginning of this article, the
main reason for us to be in New York was the opening of Mark’s first
international exhibition and this alone would have made the whole trip an
amazing experience. I believe I
was at least as proud and probably even more excited and nervous than Mark –
the idea of seeing his pictures in the midst of this amazing city was simply
overwhelming. It is difficult to
describe just how cool it is to be underway in Chelsea and to go to a gallery
reception to see pictures that you were there at there point of inception -
This was simply a wonderful evening.
The gallery itself was great with wonderful staff, the other artists and
the public: A heady mixture. The
pictures in the form they were presented were simply “WOW” and the fact that
they were taken up with an amazingly positive resonance from public and gallery
alike simply made the whole experience even better. I do not believe I could have been more proud even if it had
been my own pictures ;-) all in all an unforgettable experience!
Am Anfang denkt man (ich ;-)) es sei unmöglich
sich in dieser Stadt zurecht zu finden und zu orientieren, aber an sich ist es
durch die Nummerierung der Straßen und der Geradlinigkeit garnicht so schwer.
Und ich war natürlich in der glücklichen Lage mit Mark unterwegs zu sein der
New York kennt und sich gut zurechtfindet. Auch mit dem Auto was mir sowieso
einen riesigen Respekt eingeflößt hat, der Verkehr, die vollen Straßen und die
nichtiger eindeutige Beschilderung ist für mich verwirrend und eher etwas
beängstigend. ;-)
Wie am Anfang bereits geschrieben war ja der
Hauptgrund für unseren New York Aufenthalt Marks Ausstellung und deren
Eröffnung. Schon das allein wäre ein geniales Erlebnis gewesen. Ich war glaub
ich mindestens genauso stolz und wahrscheinlich viel aufgeregter als Mark, aber
die Idee seine Bilder inmitten dieser Stadt in einer Galerie zu sehen war schon
überwältigend. Schwer zu beschreiben wie cool das Gefühl war abends nach
Chelsea zu gehen um an einer Reception teilzunehmen mit Marks Bildern. Das war
schon ein großartiger Abend. Die Galerie an sich und die netten Mitarbeiter,
die anderen Künstler und das Publikum. Die Bilder wirkten in dieser Größe und
der Art der Präsentation einfach nur “WOW” und die Tatsache, dass sie auch mit
großer und sehr positiver Resonanz wahrgenommen wurden war natürlich ein Grund
mehr zur Freude. Ich glaube ich hätte nicht stolzer sein können wären es meine
eigenen Bilder gewesen. ;-)
Jedenfalls war die Galerie und die Ausstellung
ganz großartig und ein unvergessliches Erlebnis.

New York made, not unexpectedly, an amazing
impression, but the simple dimensions of the city and the impression it would
make was nevertheless not something that I really anticipated in advance and
was almost a dream almost surreal.
In the end it was very real however and I hope the photos help to transport
a little of the fascination even if there are already so many New York pictures
and in the end it is difficult to show something which is so very ’new’. In any event, we had a couple of wonderful
days and took some wonderful memories and experiences away with us from the
city that you simply just have to ‘be there’.
